Bolt Threads is a material solutions company that uses nature as inspiration to invent cutting-edge materials for the fashion and beauty industries. These materials aim to put the company on a path toward a more sustainable future. Bolt Threads collaborates with world-class brands and supply chain partners to create better materials for a better world.
Mylo is a bio-based leather alternative made from mycelium, the underground root-like system of fungi. It is soft, supple, and less harmful to the environment. Mylo has sparked a “mushroom leather” movement and has been supported by brands such as Adidas, Lululemon, Stella McCartney, and others.
Mylo has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional leather made from cattle because it does not require the large amounts of energy, land, and calories needed to raise livestock. This means that customers can enjoy the properties of leather without contributing to the negative environmental impact of cattle farming.
Bolt Threads Vision
Bolt Threads envisions a world where we can benefit from nature’s secrets without depleting or polluting our forests, oceans, and rivers. The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries, but Bolt Threads is working to change that. By re-engineering the entire manufacturing process from start to finish, the company aims to reduce the long-term environmental impact of materials and create a better world for both people and the environment.
Dan Widmaier has been with Bolt Threads since 2009 and has been instrumental in the company’s growth. He is passionate about finding the right conditions to grow things and has used his expertise to lead the company through technology development, expansion, and financing. Dan holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from UC San Francisco, where his graduate research focused on designing genetic circuits to control microbial organelles.
