Mycelium leather

During this 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its concept car, the Vision EQXX. The electric-powered car features futuristic design elements, and its interior is equipped with two sustainable leather alternatives and a silk derived from biotechnology.

The car’s seats, console, and doors are upholstered using Deserttex, a leather-like material created by start-up Adriano Di Marti from a blend of nopal cactus and biobased polyurethane. Mylo, another leather-like material made from fungal mycelium by Bolt Threads, is also used in the car’s interior design. These sustainable materials are part of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to environmentally-friendly initiatives and innovation in the automotive industry.
